I have removed valve covers on many Fords and Chevys and scraped around on heads to get as much sludge etc out as possible, carefully pushing it in piles and lifting all out that I could Then you push whaterver is left down valve lifter holes, an all other ports of head that allow flow down to bottom, -- when you have gone as far as you can in that direction, get a %26quot;parts wash brush%26quot; (or a 1/2 - 3/4%26quot; paint brush will work)-- now using solvent (or gasoline) clean out as much as possible! After finishing both sides , pull out drainplug and dump oil, pour a little more solvent down on each side to try and flush any loose stuff still left in pan! Fill with new oil (cheapest available ok)! Put in at least a pint of %26quot;marvel mystery oil in 4 quarts, this will work up to 5 quarts ok, but if over 6 quart capacity use a quart! Drive 500-600 miles and do a %26quot;normal oil change with filter! By now engine should be really clean inside! If worried about viscosity (because of hot weather) you can go to next highest weight oil, as marvel mystery oil is a little thinner than engine oil! -- I has lots of really good %26quot;cleaning esters%26quot; in it (even smells good)How do i clean out the carbon in the oil holes on the heads of 350 chevy?
take a coat hanger and cut it to about 14 inches, bend it gently into a lot of little s shapes and use it in your hand drill. i had the problem once of my car smoking, i did that , then used about a quart of kerosene in each head and ran it for like 2 minutes then clean (or empty the pan). worked for me.
