1994 dodge shadow 3.0L 5speed?

how rare is the car if it is at all? do they put this type of engine in any other vehicles that i could swap parts on? if so which cars should i look for? also where can i find what the plugs should be gaped at? i changed the old plugs and wires and the old ones i pulled out weren't gaped either and it misses evey so often. and oil is burning from somewhere i believe its the valve cover gasket. their are only two bolts the hold it on. i tried tightening them but still didn't help. Im looking for fans of this car or someone that had one with this type of engine and tranny. does it have potential or should i just leave it alone and beat it till it don't run anymore. either way i don't care i got it cheap. but if i can make it into a decent runner i would like to. cause i don't see very many people that run this car with this type of engine. that's why i like it so much cause its not a honda civic like every one and their brother owns. thanks for reading.1994 dodge shadow 3.0L 5speed?
there's still a lot of those around that are running and driving, its not real rare and not going to hold any real value as a collector car,if you want to fix it up though it would make a nice one to have running right, you can still find an engine for it ,they used those engines in many other cars, look at the condition of it and decide if its worth putting the money in to or not,if its going to cost more to fix it than it will ever be worth then you might want to rethink the idea of putting a lot of money in to it,if its 2 door car id fix it up and drive it,a good set of wheels on it and some tinted glass and you,d have a pretty good car, they run real good when the engine is right in them, good luck.1994 dodge shadow 3.0L 5speed?
It is pretty rare, I'm not sure if they put this engine in any other vehicle, a 3.0L is pretty rare among dodges. I think you should fix it up, its not worth a ton of money, but it is a good car and sounds like a fun to drive car as well1994 dodge shadow 3.0L 5speed?
the engine code is 6G72, its made by mitsubishi and found in lots of dodges, mitsubishis, cryslers even early 90s hyundai sonotas.1994 dodge shadow 3.0L 5speed?
The engine has been found in Acclaims, Spirits, LeBarons, Dynastys, Caravans, Voyagers, Daytonas, Sundances, Shadows, etc. The engine is not rare, but a five speed behind it is unusual.1994 dodge shadow 3.0L 5speed?
Yes the car has some potential. With the right bolt on parts, you should be able to get your shadow to run high 14s.

Those bolt on parts would be a dynomax catback exhaust, FM underdrive pulley, cold air intake, and 52mm throttle body. With those parts, my retired daytona iroc made 153whp and ran low 15s all day along. A dodge shadow is several hundred pounds lighter, meaning faster.

For my daytona, I later added a lightened flywheel, 58mm throttle body and a piggy back timing computer. I got the car to put down 159whp and made good gains under the peak power adjusting my timing. Megasquirt wasn't around back then. I'm sure there was more power to be tweaked since I never touched the fuel.

You can take the 3.0 pretty far. Several have adapted GM superchargers. Some have made homegrown turbo kits. There were even a few running 150shot of nitrous. There was at one time a vendor selling 10 to 1 compression forged pistons and cam regrinds. Same vendor was importing some parts from RPW of Australia. Some even updated/back dated using parts from mitsu cars powered by the 3.0.

As for leaking oil from the valve cover. First stop overtightening the bolts. All you are doing is digging the valve cover into the head. Replace the valve cover gasket to stop the leak.1994 dodge shadow 3.0L 5speed?
I had a '93 Spirit with a 3.0. I loved that car! Bought it for $300 and drove it to hell and back. That lil girl started right up every time even at 15 below! I always wanted to find a Shadow with a bad motor and swap it cause the Spirit was a 4 door. I finally found one the week after I sent mine to the junkyard cause the transmission went out!

How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?

i have a 1994 ford ranger, 4cly, 5 speed so there is 8 spark plugs and wires.

i was told to junk my truck due to the Piston O rings r shot. since its junk anyway....how can i %26quot;work%26quot; on the engine with my lil tool kit and try to replace them? make my truck run great again like it did 3 months ago and for the last 10 years!!!!

do they actually look like lil rings? will i need 4 ?

i will need to replace the head gasket and the valve cover gasket too?

seals that hold the throttle body down to the intake?

maybe that gasket too? ,should i rebuild the throttle body while im at it????

btw changing out the spark plugs. and all the wires.

how long will this take me? ya i am a girl, been a while since i got my fingers dirty.....thanks and wish me luck. if i mess it up, then i am out a few bucks, and a lil time.,.,,if i dont try then i am not who i say i am!

have a great day and ty for reading either way...How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
LOL. I got a good chuckle out of your question and at most of the answers. no offense, but you know absolutely nothing about engines, except what you have heard repeated from a shade tree mechanic. and neither do most of the people who threw up an answer.

I will not sit here and waste 30 minutes telling you about the intracasies of an internal combustion engine, so bear with me when i give you the shortest answer for your issue.

Your piston rings are located on your pistons (obviously) and this is an internal part. You would have to remove the engine from the car and disassemble the entire motor to replace the piston rings.

Not only, however can you just %26quot;replace the piston rings%26quot; and drive along merrily. You must take that block to a compitent machinist, have it cleaned and checked for cracks or damage, and he will have the final say-so on how much material will have to be removed from the cylinders to %26quot;clean them up%26quot; for new piston rings.

Probably, (and most older engines fall into this category) you can take a worn out block and bore it .020 or .030 over (.030 over is highly common) and install new oversize pistons and rings, then reuse the rods, crank ect (all good reusable parts) and replace all gaskets with new gaskets obviously. You cannot reuse head gaskets, intake gaskets, ect.

I highly recommend you either let a trained professional do the work, or buy another vehicle that doesn't have these issues, because if you attempt to do this yourself, you will be walking, not driving.

You must have quite a bit of miles on that 2.3 engine, as they typically last well over 240,000 miles. If nothing else, and IF you have enough knowledge on the subject, you can pull another 2.3 engine from a mustang, other ranger, or pinto. Those motors are highly common. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
Well they are inside the engine so you need to do a lot of disassembly just to get them out. You would need to replace all the seals and gaskets that you took apart (and since you have everything apart its easy to just take the everything rest apart and make sure everything is fixed/rebuilt not just the obvious problem). This is why its not worth it to fix on such an old truck. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
to replace the piston rings you have to tear the hole engine down. The engine will have to come out of the truck to do this. Each cylinder has three rings on it, two compression rings, and a oil ring. Almost all of the gaskets will have to be replaced. There is no need to rebuild the throttle body. It will take a lot of time. Sorry, but its not worth it.How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
Changing the piston rings is a MAJOR job and cannot be done without removing the engine. Plus, the cylinder will need to be honed as well. This is not a do it yourself type of job.How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
8 plugs so you have 8 pistons and on those pistons you have oil rings and compression rings. if all that,s wrong then your better off to change the motor. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
blast it with pissHow do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
It would take to long to explain everything but here is a little insight. It's a big job that requires allot of precision tools and equipment as well as knowledge. The reciprocating motion of the pistons turns into rotary motion of the crank shaft. This creates friction and heat where the oil comes involved. There are three rings on the piston that stop the oil from entering the combustion chamber. If the rings wear out, you'll have black smoke out of the exhaust and your spark plugs will be oily. The cylinder walls are probably worn out not to mention allot of other things. It's too big a job for most people. Good Luck to you!How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
I dont intend to discourage you but this is a really complicated job for someone with no experience. If you will need the truck anytime soon I highly recommend taking it in for repair.

If you want to keep the truck as a project and work on it as you learn then I would recommend getting a factory service manual and going along at your own pace.

Good Luck! its a lot of fun to be able to work on your own vehicles and you will learn a lot in the process. How do i fix my piston rings? and what r they?
Piston rings go around the piston (the thing that moves up and down) so oil and gas and crap doesn't leak out of the cylinder. They are very difficult to replace because you have to take apart the block. Yes they look like rings, as they go around the round piston. You may as well replace all, yes. You may as well replace the valve gasket while you are at it, because if the rings are fried, then most likely, the valves are going to be leaking. No, I doubt the gasket that holds the throttle body and intake will need to be replaced. It will take you all day, or even two days. Good luck! A Le-mans repair manual like, Haynes or of the same sort, will be very handy!

How do i clean out the carbon in the oil holes on the heads of 350 chevy?

i ahd a mech change the intake man gaskets, can i take off the valve covers to clean out the oil fill holes? starting to get a lifter knock, waht about engine flush mixed in crank case? How do i clean out the carbon in the oil holes on the heads of 350 chevy?
I have removed valve covers on many Fords and Chevys and scraped around on heads to get as much sludge etc out as possible, carefully pushing it in piles and lifting all out that I could Then you push whaterver is left down valve lifter holes, an all other ports of head that allow flow down to bottom, -- when you have gone as far as you can in that direction, get a %26quot;parts wash brush%26quot; (or a 1/2 - 3/4%26quot; paint brush will work)-- now using solvent (or gasoline) clean out as much as possible! After finishing both sides , pull out drainplug and dump oil, pour a little more solvent down on each side to try and flush any loose stuff still left in pan! Fill with new oil (cheapest available ok)! Put in at least a pint of %26quot;marvel mystery oil in 4 quarts, this will work up to 5 quarts ok, but if over 6 quart capacity use a quart! Drive 500-600 miles and do a %26quot;normal oil change with filter! By now engine should be really clean inside! If worried about viscosity (because of hot weather) you can go to next highest weight oil, as marvel mystery oil is a little thinner than engine oil! -- I has lots of really good %26quot;cleaning esters%26quot; in it (even smells good)How do i clean out the carbon in the oil holes on the heads of 350 chevy?
take a coat hanger and cut it to about 14 inches, bend it gently into a lot of little s shapes and use it in your hand drill. i had the problem once of my car smoking, i did that , then used about a quart of kerosene in each head and ran it for like 2 minutes then clean (or empty the pan). worked for me.

So my car is leaking oil but only when it is running?

how do i know where it is leaking from? it used to leak a little seep but now it leaks a bunch. i started my car earlier and i let it run for awhile and backed it up to leave and noticed it was huge puddle of oil and it was streaming out. i was told it was the valve cover gasket but how do i know for sure? and also its a 1990 ford probe are they hard to change? its leaking down about the middle of the motor on the bottom you cant see any leakage from the top you have to get under the car to see it. its like between the oil pan and transmission? So my car is leaking oil but only when it is running?
the oil pipe may has some hole which is the responsible for leaking.check it or take it to the car repair shop and change the pipe.So my car is leaking oil but only when it is running?

  • during the summer
  • Two comforters in the duvet
  • How good is the Lucas Oil?

I have decided t put .75 quarts per every 4 in my 1991 Ford Escort wagon. It also seems there may be a leaking valve cover gasket, as there is a lot of gunky oil on the head cover and around a spot close to the belts. If it is a valve cover gasket, i have heard it is very simple to replace... also makes ticking noise, they said it sounds like a gasket leak. Had no starter fluid to test. Doesnt 'spew' oil, but would explain it....

Anyeays, i wanted to know if Lucas has worked wonders for anyone. I even added like .25 a quart to my transmission (it said it bonds with ATF) and no itsnot the Stop Leak, lol.

Its so thick, its like STP. I know STP is useless. Lucas has no teflon or chlorine and it says 100% pertoleum. What does that mean.....

Also, the AMSOil and Royal Purple and Castol syntec are a) OVERKILL and b) ENGINE DESTROYERS for my car. I plan on using the Valvoline MaxLife NON-SYNTHETIC BLEND (3 quarts) and Lucas non-syntheric (.75 quart) and Wix filter every oil change.

    Just how -good- is it?

I also wonder if i should just leave my trans alone, and top off wit Lucas... level is good thoug...

122,000 1991 Ford Escort 1.9L Auto, maybe leaky valve cover (mechanically inclined said not a big deal, just clean it and watch it and no it wont kill engine) and wanting to make it run forever, really....How good is the Lucas Oil?

Just use the proper fluids and forget about magic oils and such.

My car just began blowing blue smoke, how can I be sure what the problem is?

It's a 2002 Toyota Solara with 87k mi. I haven't had any problems with it, though when I had a fuse replaced this summer, I noticed 2 valve cover bolts missing afterwards (shiny screw holes) I just had another oil change and it immediately began blowing blue smoke when I start it and also when I accelerate. The goodyear place put in MORE oil, as it is burning it. There are no leaks. They accused me of not getting oil changes. I do this at 7000 miles (as per book)as I drive turnpike speeds mostly. They're saying valve cover gasket, and maybe valves now. Why would this be all of a sudden like this, and how much does each step cost, with an honest business?

Is it really worth fixing? It needs new sneakers, subwoofer, and maybe paint to look really sweet again. My car just began blowing blue smoke, how can I be sure what the problem is?
Trust me with this. There is a difference between internal leak and external leak. Missing valve cover bolts will let oil to leak out to engine. You may see smoke from the engine bay but never from tail pipe. From my experience, sudden blue smoke after oil change is usually from over filling the engine with oil. If your engine is V6, it should take about five and a half quarts. Pull the dipstick out and check the level. If it檚 way over, you found the problem. Otherwise, you probably have an internal leak. If there is no tapping or knocking noise, I suspect the engine may be jelling which let oil to leak through valve seals (they are different from valve cover gasket) to combustion chamber. Some Toyota V6檚 are known to jell when they are not maintained regularly. Take it to a Toyota dealer and get an accurate diagnosis. It may cost about $50~100. Misdiagnosed, you could spend thousands more for parts you don檛 need. But remember, check the dipstick/oil level first! My car just began blowing blue smoke, how can I be sure what the problem is?
    Blue smoke is bad.

Could be valve guides if it skokes bad when started then is good.

    This is expensive.

More than likely the engine is worn out. (very expensive).

I would be looking at trading it in while it still runs.My car just began blowing blue smoke, how can I be sure what the problem is?
if oil is burning in your chambers it is either a blown gasket or worn piston ringsMy car just began blowing blue smoke, how can I be sure what the problem is?
Take care of the engine first before the speakers and paint.

Blue smoke is always an indicator of burning oil.

If you're missing bolts from the valve cover, then there is not a good seal to keep fluids in the engine, so the pistons and rings are hotter and burning oil. The rings can go, the valves can warp and the pistons can as well and then the engine willl seize up and stop. Sounds like your mechanic is being on the level with you about what needs to be done.

Unfortunately, you should have acted immediately when you noticed the missing valve cover bolts. Even a week or two of operating your car with missing bolts like this can damage or cripple your car's engine.

So skip the ruffles and bows of speakers, subwoofers and pain and take care of the fundamentals first. My car just began blowing blue smoke, how can I be sure what the problem is?
blue smoke means you are buring oil, plus with the bolts missing on the valve cover you are probably losing oil from that also. replace the missing boltsMy car just began blowing blue smoke, how can I be sure what the problem is?
BIG PROBLEMS. blue smoke usually means that youre burning oil. that being said, rings in a cyclinder could be bad or you have a set of burnt valves either way your looking at some money. a valve cover gasket has nothing to do with it, it is alot deeper than that. damn the luck.

1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?

Hello, i want ur opinion on my cituation. I want to go to florida, and the car i have is a 1994 oldsmobile delta 88 lss with 248,000 miles on it. its currently running strong, starts up like a car with 30,000 miles on it. I do an oil change every 2,500 miles. In addition i have replaced the power steering pump, oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, fuel filter, air filter, main serpentine belt, spark plug wires, spark plugs, new tires all within the last 5,000 miles, and i regularly jack the car up and inspect and repair rust, and check for leaking. I check the fluids 3 times a week. Do you believe that i do enough preventative maintence to ensure that it will run well/ last a long time? i have confidence in the car to make the 2500 mile journey to florida, but im wondering how someone would look at this from a diffrent prespective, possibly another mechanic. Thank you in advance!1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?
mm sounds like you do more than enough to keep you car in good condition ..continue doing so and the car will last longer as of going to fl.. then go for it but when stoping for gas check everything over oil, breakes, tranny fluid, everything you check on your car and drive easy and safe and you will be ok

friend drove his truck with almost 400,000 miles to alabama from northcarolina and back and had no problems

\have a safe trip1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?
it should make it but also you might want to look at your head and intake gaskets as well they are known to leak on those engines no matter what you do. if your oil looks kinda like choclate milk or has a brown texture to it then it is leakin somewhere. another thing check your serp. belt. if it is cracked every 2 inches replace it and if not do yourself a favor either carry a spare with you or believe it or not carry a pair of nylons with you. the nylons will make it to a shop or gas station. also carry the tool that you would need to relieve tension on the tensioner pulley. but other than that you should make it ok. take other preventative things with you in case of an emergency. such as a full size spare tire. tire inflator or air compressor. jumper cables, a couple of snack bars high in protein. flash light and a screwdriver set phillips and regular.1994 oldsmobile, will im make it to fl and back?
okay i thought of going to a far away place too in my 1996 bmw after i fix it but what i figured is just go at night when there isnt as much heat or stress on your car and i personally think it will do fine if you have faith and your a mechanic you should be ok idk tho but i am a very smart college student lol.

1995 Dodge Caravan Base 6 cyl. 3.0 ltr. engine timing problem?

Had an oil leak with valve cover and distributor adaptor (front cam). I have changed out the o-ring and 2 seals, valve cover gasket and plug, I marked the cam to head, distributor to adaptor, and rotor button to distributor before removing anything. I marked the spark plug wires to rotor cap. When replacing the camshaft gear the timing belt was moved. When I lined all my marks back up and torqued everything down, the engine will not crank. It turns over but does not engage. I have fire coming form coil wire. My brother -in - law came over and helped me turn the engine to top dead center and we placed the rotor button at firing order 1 plug. Still engine will turn over but will not engage (crank). My question is. How would I go about resetting both front and rear cams with engine set to top dead center. I believe when my ex was putting the timing belt back on, the rear camshaft was turned. So I need to get the engine back to top dead center and make sure the front and rear camshaft gears are in time as well. Please help. 98 Honda Accord LX 4 Cylinder V-Tech Engine?

Recently I had an oil change done on my 98 accord 4 cyl V-Tech engine. It appears some couple months later I have an oil leak. It appears not all the bolts that hold down the valve cover gasket are there? Does anyone know how many bolts hold down the gasket and where they are located? Or is there a web site that might show me a design? Sure looks to me like at least 1 bolt on right side (facing engine) of valve cover gasket is missing. It's threaded and no bolt is there, this is also the side where oil seems to be dripping. Any help is greatly appreciated.98 Honda Accord LX 4 Cylinder V-Tech Engine?

Seems like your valve cover gasket, someone probably didnt intsall it correctly and didnt use RTV sealant around the bends. Take it to a shop and have them look at it. Honda will rape you so I would go to someone you know personally that has mechanical experience. It is a easy fix if that what the problem is.98 Honda Accord LX 4 Cylinder V-Tech Engine?
You should have 6 bolts on the valve cover. The bolts should be torqued to 12-15 ft. lbs. Just make sure that the oil is coming from that spot. Oil can be easily sprayed from other parts of the engine. And it's VTEC not Vtech. Vtech is a phone company lol.

And the age of your car doesnt have anything to do with replacing your headgasket. It's actually fairly new when it comes to Hondas. Unless you beat your car daily or you have run your car without oil and coolant and you threw a rod out of the side of the block then I understand why you would change the headgasket.

I have a 1990 and a 1991 Honda Prelude, I've never had to change the headgasket so far.

  • Honda 98 Accord V-Tech 4 cylinder engine?

Recently I had an oil change done on my 98 accord 4 cyl V-Tech engine. It appears some couple months later I have an oil leak. It appears not all the bolts that hold down the valve cover gasket are there? Does anyone know how many bolts hold down the gasket and where they are located? Or is there a web site that might show me a design? Sure looks to me like at least 1 bolt on right side (facing engine) of valve cover gasket is missing. It's threaded and no bolt is there, this is also the side where oil seems to be dripping. Any help is greatly appreciated.Honda 98 Accord V-Tech 4 cylinder engine?

How can I make my high mileage '94 Honda Accord last longer?

I bought an automatic '94 Honda Accord LX used at 135,000 miles and it now has 145,000 miles. I don't know its previous history but it runs great and I just recently had some maintenance work done to it like replacing spark plugs, air filter, pcv valve, drive belts(power steering and alternator), oxygen sensor, front brake pads and valve cover gasket to fix a bad oil leak. I change the oil every 3000 miles and always make sure I have enough oil, transmission, power steering, antifreeze and brake fluid. I'd like to make this car last as long as I can, hopefully another 100,000. What else will help my Honda achieve that? Any tips will be appreciated, thanks! How can I make my high mileage %26039;94 Honda Accord last longer?
That's about it. Keep doing those things as required and you should be good. How can I make my high mileage %26039;94 Honda Accord last longer?
I have a '95 honda accord. Unless you completely neglect this car it can go up to 250,000 - 300,000 easily. Just keep doing what your doing. How can I make my high mileage %26039;94 Honda Accord last longer?
    Congratulations

So very nice to hear from a responsible car owner.

You're doing everything you should, keep it up.

My brother inlaw has a 96 and it just turned over 300k with regular maintenance and repairs. How can I make my high mileage %26039;94 Honda Accord last longer?
Great car! make sure you keep up with the timming belt changes every 105,000 miles, oil change every 3,000 miles and it will run a very long time. Cv axle boots dry crack and it's best to replace the boots before they split and damage the axles. Honda engines are very well bulit. The transmissions are good too. Transmission will probably need overhaul before the engine will. Your recent repairs may have been expensive, but it's cheaper than a new car payment.

How do i access the valve covers on a 1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5L engine?

My car is running hot and I believe it is because of a blown gasket, maybe the valve cover (oil looks like it's leaking out of the sides). I changed the thermostat, flushed the radiator and the fan is working. After starting my car and driving it until it ran hot, I noticed that the coolant in the overflow tank was bubbling.

I took the big metal piece off on top ( I believe it's called a manifold vacuum) and I can reach the valve covers. There are two on each side. The only thing in the way now are these black rubber hoses that lead into the valve covers. There are three on each side and the one in the middle on each side has another thin hose connected to it that won't allow me to pull them out. I tried to put everything back together but the two middle ones won't go back in. I HOPE I didn't mess anything up. Can someone PLEASE give me some advice. I don't have the money to get it fixed. I know a little bit about cars but I have never been in an engine before. How do i access the valve covers on a 1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5L engine?
I've never been in an engine before either - too big of a guy. Anywho, its not anything to do with the valve covers - so forget about those. I think you are right about the headgasket being blown - however, you have to removed the heads (and yes, the valve covers do come before the heads), but unless you are REALLY good with engines, a headgasket is not an hour fix.

Fuel pressure regulator and BAD fuel mileage?

My 1987 Bronco ll 4x4 is only getting about 8-10 miles to the gallon!I posted on the Bronco site where the average mileage acording to those owners is 18-26 mpg!You can literally watch it suck gas, ate up almost a quarter tank on a 30 mile trip to work tonight. The suggestion was a failing fuel regulator or leaky injectors.I dont smell gas though. The only thing i smell is oil from the valve cover gaskets. It sounds great.I do hear what sounds like a sputtering when i accelerate (vacuum?) but that could just be the engine. You do have to push it a little before it catches on the highway and it hard shifts but im in the process of changing the filthy fluid thats been sitting in it.It hadnt been driven it a couple years.I just put a new cat converter, major tune up,EGR valve and cleaned ports, oxygen sensot, map sensor %26amp; both fuel filters and o-ring- the canister was missing.I know it needs an air flow idle sensor, what could this be?What is the labor on a regulator? How easy is it to check?Fuel pressure regulator and BAD fuel mileage?
I had one go bad on my Ford Ranger pickup, yes, it used alot of fuel. They are relatively cheap and easy to replace, however, you need a gauge to check fuel pressure that most home mechanics do not have.Fuel pressure regulator and BAD fuel mileage?
better put the canister back on.what about plugs and wires, did you change the cap and rotor.check all vaccum hoses for leaks.put a vaccum tester on it and also check the fuel pump regulator,it could be letting too much gas to come into the injectors and burning raw gas.that would be enough to make it hessitate.

Oil Leak on 1991 Dodge Carivan 3.0 Engine?

I had a leak in my 1991 dodge carivan so i had my friend change the oil pan gasket. Before it was dripping and went thru 1 gallon of oil a day.. Now it goes thru 1 gallon a 1/2 hour. Where could it possibly be leaking. Its not from the valve cover gaskets they are all dry. it looks like the pan but we stripped off the old gasket and put the silicone on the bottom AND the top so it would not leak. any ideas and how hard is what you think it is to fix on this carOil Leak on 1991 Dodge Carivan 3.0 Engine?
its probably still leaking from the corners of the new gasket area, you have to use a lot of silicone on them or they will leak worse than they did before,if you,ll check it you,ll probably find that its pouring now from the inner corners on it,good luck.Oil Leak on 1991 Dodge Carivan 3.0 Engine?
To me it sounds like you did something wrong when you changed the pan gasket. That job is quite involved bec not only does all the old gasket have to be properly removed but also the surfaces need to be fully cleaned , plus totally dry , and the even the sequence of what bolts you tighten up first or how much you tighten them up affects the end results.

I'am sure you didn't mean a gallon and you meant a quart of oil but still that amount of oil loss within 30 mins would be extremely noticeable and again if the only place you see wet oil etc is along and on the pan that suggest that the pan gasket is leaking and even an oil drain pan bolt can leak.

Hope hat helps and best of luck.By the way first I'd look over the whole engine very closely for oils leaks but If I were you I'd re-due the gasket and this time don't use any silicone gasket maker with the gasket either just use the gasket maker or a gasket bec having an even flush seal is also vital.

What I recommend you try doing if you don't have a torque wrench or factory torque specs etc is once you change the gasket on any pan later after the vehicles been driven 60 or 100 miles or so go back and lightly tighten the bolts a bit more.

  • Fan clutch blowed up?

I have a 1990 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed(it turns as sharp as a freight train) with the stock fuel injected 351w. About a month ago it stalled, I re-cranked it and there was a whole series of bad sounds under the hood. I turned the key off immediately and pulled it back into my driveway with a chain.

From what I can tell it looks like the fan clutch literally exploded and a piece of it shot through the water pump and into the timing cover.

Its probably a good thing it happened because the water pump was probably about due to be changed and as I got in there I realized the timing chain was worn, and since a piece of fan clutch dropped into the oil pan I had to pull the oil pan which needed a new gasket. Had to pull the plenum to get the motor high enough to change the oil pan gasket so i needed a new plenum gasket too. Also realized it was time for motor mounts and valve cover gaskets and complete tune-up. Anyways the truck is back together and runs great and sounds great... well it sounds great everywhere except from the driver seat. lol the tailpipes are about 20 feet behind my head so I cant hear how beautiful my straight pipes sound from all the way up front. The truck has no catalytic convertors from the factory- I guess it counted as being a heavy duty truck and was exempt from certain emissions laws?

Anyways my question is this.... Anyone other than me ever heard of a fan clutch breaking the water pump and timing cover? I know a lot of mechanics and no one believes me. In my dirt track racing days ive seen plenty of fans come loose and hit the radiator but not the water pump and timing cover.Fan clutch blowed up?
I've never heard of it happening but when something is spinning over 1000 RPMs, anything can happen when something breaks loose.

I knew a guy got killed from a grinding wheel coming apart because he was grinding on the flat side of it. A piece went through his forehead.

Like I said, RPMs and breaking apart cause weird things to happen.Fan clutch blowed up?
    Never heard of it.

Most fan clutches are an oil chamber, and almost can't cause a problem. The worst they do is bind and stop slipping as they are supposed to. This does not sound like an oil hydrostatic clutch. I have seen clutches that were electric, but I don't see how they could blow either. I would love to see the pieces.Fan clutch blowed up?

Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?

I have a 1998 Camry almost 170,000 miles on it...it is used to travel back and forth to work round trip 90+ miles. It is now leaking oil badly..so badly I have to put a quart of oil in every 3 days, my driveway is stained with oil.

...I have seen oil come out of the bottom of the oil filter when I start up the engine.

...the oil change place says it is a %26quot;Valve cover gasket%26quot; leaking...

Please assist by telling me what your opinion as to what the problem may be based upon your experience. How much is it to fix a valve cover gasket.

.....also do oil additives work and are safe, the ones that supposedly stop leaks. Thank you for your help.

...note the oil change place says that oil is not coming out of the bottom of the oil filer,...however I seen it for myself, but there was also oil coming out of the back of the engine too supposedly where the gasket valve cover was...Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?
the valve covers leaking could be it, the blow by of the oil could end up anywhere.

Fix the gasket yourself, less than $20, take it somewhere, probably $125.00 on up.Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?
Replace the filter and eliminate that. Take it for a second opinion, sounds like they told you what is wrong but you'd rather keep spending money on oil rather than fixing what's wrong. Please help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?
no much not a big deal there real cheap from aftermarket

you can do it yourself just get the appropriate tools its just unscrewing and disconnecting wires to make room real simple youll get dirty but save moneyPlease help....my 1998 Camry is leaking oil badly....?
On your way home, when the engine is at operating temperature, pull into the car wash and use the high pressure with soap. Do not spray directly at electronic or electric components, but along the valve covers, down the block, around the pan and filters as best you can. Drive it home and look for fresh oil. There are also spray cleaners that work, but cost a bit more. After washing, if the car doesn't want to restart, let it sit 5 minutes with the hood up and try again.

Bad cover gaskets can be the problem. The oil is blown to the back of the engine and runs down where it is protected from the fan blast. If this is the case, most likely the oil pan gasket is the same age. Where the oil comes from tells where the problem is, look at the source and not the drip.

Need help replaceing intake gaskets on pontiac montana?

how do you get the coil bracket off the motor to allow acces to rear valve cover? and is it necessary to remove the pushrods to change gaskets? if so how do you readjust valves (roller cam) and last but not least is the problem with these 3.4 engines loosing intake gaskets do to the dexcool antifreeze?????????Need help replaceing intake gaskets on pontiac montana?
Undo the bolts on the coil bracket that u cant see. Back of the engine, under the coil. Yup, take them pushrods off. Dont need adjusting, but get the torque spec for em. Aftermarket gaskets wont leak again, but buy good ones like Fel pro gasketsNeed help replaceing intake gaskets on pontiac montana?
Could not tell you how to remove the coil bracket (without being a smart---).

The pushrods will have to be removed, they may be different length between intake and exhaust, and there is not adjustment, you just torque the rocker arm down to specs.

The intakes leaking is not due to dexcool but rather gasket design. Felpro makes a problem solver gasket kit for many of these applications which should include every gasket you need (valve cover gaskets, ect). The aftermarket does make the original style gaskets so watch what you buy, the original design will give you the same problem. I buy my felpro kits at either NAPA or Oriely's.Need help replaceing intake gaskets on pontiac montana?
You didn't mention what year your Montana was, but this repair guide covers the 1999 model as well as earlier Transports, and the engine should be pretty much the same still for a while after that.

    http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090

As far as the push rods, if you do have to take them out their position should be kept track of so that they can be returned to the same spot, not just Intakes vs Exhausts.

Can't really find anything on the coil pack, except for an alternate location up by the front end of the motor, but I have seen what you're talking about, and the bracket is usually mounted to the cylinder head on the back side.

    One other tip is that you could try to rotate the engine. The Lumina cars had this feature so you could change the spark plugs on the back side, and this vehicle is virtually identical in the front end. You can find that described here;

    http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090

As far as %26quot;tool J 41131%26quot; it's just a nylon strap with hooks on the end like you can find at any hardware store.

    http://gsi.xw.gm.com/image_en_us/gif/000

P.S. Oh yeah, it's the gaskets not the Dex-Cool that's the problem. Go with the highest quality FelPro gasket for replacement.

    3) Motor Mounts

    4) Flat Belts

    5) Valve Cover Gasket, cover, outer

    6) Valve Cover Gasket, spark plug, inner

The biggest cost in all is motor mounts. It costs about 900 including labour. They have never been changed in 120k. The car does vibrate a bit due to that, but if i dont change them what will be the effects ?

The machanic told you only what he could see, so how do you know there isn't something about to go out inside the engine like a spun crank bearing or a cracked valve guide?

I would suggest looking for a different vehicle for the price they are asking.

Nissans are good cars, if you do go through with the repairs, the car will probably last you a very long time. But, imports, as you know, are incredibly expensive to repair when something does go wrong.

I'm no mechanic, but the coolant flush is not necessary. You should not get the tranny flushed either, unless you notice significant problems in shifting.

I really don't know about the rest. I'd say for that year and that kind of mileage, you are probably getting a good deal buy paying $2800 for the car and getting the repairs done on top of that. Having said that, I would probably do it, but also be prepared to drive the car into the ground, because if you decide to sell it, you will not get out of it what you put into it, as far as a sale price goes.

If this is really causing you to struggle with a decision, I would not hesitate to take it somewhere else for a second (or even third) opinion. You will surely find out if you are getting scammed or not. If you happen to decide to follow through with all of the recommended repairs, it's not like you have to get everything done at once either. Nothing on that list is incredibly pressing, but I guess it's importance depends on what you intend to use the vehicle for. I have a Daihatsu Charade (aka. Subaru Justy), engine oil is leaking from many places, and I guess I need to change a lot of gaskets and O rings. I know there is a distributor O ring and I can replace that, and I know about valve (or rocker) cover gasket, I'll buy that one as well, crankshaft is not leaking, but engine is almost covered in oil and there are always drops of oil at my parking slot.

Didn't you ask this question earlier? Look, this is not going to be a shade tree answer off the internet fix. You are dumping raw fuel into the exhaust and most likely it has clogged your catalytic converter. But by just replacing the converter most likely it will happen again. I mean a shop with diagnostic equipment can diagnose the problem for an hours labor. What type of car and what size engine? Converter could be clogged but if it was the engine wouldn't run very long and not very well. If the mixture is off, the unburnt fuel will be burning in the exhaust causing it to glow. Is the engine skipping? How do the plugs look? Have you tried looping your heater core hose and flushing your engine ? If you have a plug somewhere, then not surprising.

You haven't said if your engine otherwise runs fine. Timing chains can jump on start up. This would affect both heads/exhaust.

Another possibility is lifters are sticking. Do you have solid or hydraulic lifters ? Have you ran the engine with your valve cover off and watched to make sure everything seems to be working fine on top ? Getting oil, lifters/rockers working normal, etc.Pipe to manifold begins to glow and then the manifold, why?
    Hi!

Okay, my answers are deceptively simple, but that's the best place to start... Take off the catalytic converter, run it straight pipe, and assign two other people to help you inspect the entire line. you want to diagnose *where* the heat up starts out. Pull or swap out the parts in a systematic order as you go down the line, and see how long, or how mush stress, the engine runs before the line goes cherry. If the heat source begins in the manifold, then your repair job is to blame. If it's down the line, you're looking at a plugged line or converter. Catalytic converters can be cleaned out, but you'd have to know what you are doing to a tee, or be willing to pay for someone who does, as a damaged converter is exponentially more dangerous than a blown head. Another contender is a dud sensor, or emissions control system. Are you sure the head you replaced is a sound one? Sometimes duds come in %26quot;new%26quot; or %26quot;reconditioned%26quot; packages. Don't know if you are talking about fuel injection or a carborator system. The fuel injection cleaners that are sold over the counter are crap that does more harm than good. Ask a reputable auto shop or mechanic about who they buy their f.i. cleaners from. A blown temp gage is a bad sign, but more symptom than cause in a heat up that does not involve your coolant system. Speaking of which, I hope you are running half antifreeze and half water in the radiator, and please check to be sure... A pure water or pure antifreeze fill *will* blow the plugs on your engine block, while too little or no water/coolant will over-heat and lock up your engine. In closing, two rare but plausible sources of grief are contaminants introduced into the pistons, arms, or manifold during repairs. Be especially wary of something as simple as water in this case, as this can cause all kinds of hell , including engine over-heat or seizing. There's always some dummy who poured the wrong fluids in the wrong tubes. I've got a buddy who chronically pours engine oil in either the power steering box, the master cylinder, or a more common goof, the transmission tube. Engines hate that, and I'd like to seize his driver's license just to protect the general public from him. All of these scenarios cause engines to cherry, hope you can find the fault inexpensively.

  • Can an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. My problem is this, In July 2007 A man in a huge truck with a trailer hinge back up out from a parking space, it I saw him and the only thing I could at the time is speed up so he would not hit the middle of my car. He ended up hitting the side bumper and ripped it off. I have A 1999 Cryshler Sebring. It truely was a hard hit. Well the man's insurance did pay to fix the bumper, but now everything keeps going wrong. I did mention it to the person at the shop where we had arranged for the repair. I asked to please give me an estimated how much it would cost to fix it. When the time came, She did not do so and when I asked the lady she gave me a look like there is really something wrong with my car. I give two guys a ride to the bus so they do not have to walk the mile or so and they can attest that my car was running smooth. So many things one after another have gone wrong. I have put over 700.00 and still more problems. So my question is what do you think my chances are If I take it to the manufactor and they will rule in my favor. The Insurance Co-ordinator says if they say it was from the accident then they will pay for it. Straight from the start right after the accident my car kept dyeing out, so I had to drive it like a standard car with my feet on the gas and brake at the same time. So in the end , last I have heard there is a short somewhere so I took it to Spitfire and place that specializes in electrical problems and he told me my computer is bad. First of all the things my battery kept dyeing out, my car would not start up in the mornings,I took it to Auto zone and my battery was fat, swollen no good. Bought a new one, then I took it to a man at midas , he said I needed a valve cover gasket and he showed me my spark plugs we filled with oil, fixed that. Now Midas ran a scan and said I had either a bad map sensor or a short. Changed the map sensor the car is still barely running, so then another place said it was a short but had it for two weeks and could not find the short . I would like to know , if the guys Insurance is still on the hook for all the problems I have had with the car since the accident. Now I give these two guys a ride from work each day and they knew there was nothing wrong with my car before the accident. What is the best thing I can do. Many thanks , SylviaCan an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?
I can offer several opinions here and I hope my answer doesnt offend. I have worked with cars in some way almost all my life. I am now a claims adjuster, and can tell you based on the description of the impact you gave me, I have never of a vehicle suffering from the problems you are having to be related to that type of impact. If you had rear ended someone at high speed enough to crush the front end of your vehicle causing damages to the engine, and electrical components I could see it. But I doubt any shop out there could some how link the problems to the accident.

Right now in regards to your next step there are two senarios. If you used a shop the insurance company rec. and is part of there program, an insurance company will guar the work the shop did. If you feel these problems are related to the accident start with the adjuster and the shop to attempt to resolve the problem. They should be willing to help since you used one of their shops.

If however you used your own shop and is not part of the insurance companies preffered shop program, you are own your own with the repairs done by the shop. The insurance company cannot guar their work.

Good luckCan an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?
Its hard to prove since you have to show that it was due to the accident and nothing else. since the vehicle is eight years old they could say it had nothing to do with the accident. Also if he hit the rear bumper i doubt you have a chance... the front bumper is your best shot. Can an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?
The burden of proof is yours. You must prove beyond any doubt that the accident caused all these problems. It will help having only one trusted Mechanic to thoroughly check out your car and assess All damage. Then take this to the insurance company or if needed a lawyer. With the right documentation and a little luck you will get your car fixed properly.

Good luckCan an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?
If you signed off on the accident..your high n dry. Always get more than one estimate when dealing with these things. And never limit yourself to the place the insurance company recommends! They are not your friends! Get a free consultation from a lawyer and make sure that when he presents your requests that his fees are included. Also..lawyers in this matter often work off of commission per settlement.Be sure that is the case so that you have no money out of pocket.Have your ducks in a row when you see him..provide receipts(shows dates of repair)a list of witnesses(your friends you ride to work)and an accident report. Good luck. Can an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?
You have a nine year old vehicle that had a rear bumper damaged. This collision did NOT damage your battery, wiring, sensors, leaky valve covers or computer system. The insurance company is NOT going to pay for any of these items or tune-ups or diagnostic charges. Just suck it up and face the fact that this is normal upkeep for a car.

How much will it cost to replace VW passat parts?

So I sent my car to the local VW dealership for an oil change and I get a notice in the mail to replace these parts Drive Belts, Valve cover gasket and cam Adjuster seal

What is the estimated cost to replace these? BTW I don't have an issues with the car when I drive itHow much will it cost to replace VW passat parts?
Depends on the year and engine in your Passat. Assuming it's a B5 1.8T, the valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seals are relatively easy and quick fixes. If drive belts refers to just the accessory (serpentine) belt, that's a relatively inexpensive repair, but if you are due for your timing belt to be replaced, which is recommended after 60,000 miles but no later than 100,000 miles, then you'll be looking at around a $1000 repair bill.

For the belts, replacement is dictated purely by mileage, ranges stated above. For the gaskets, they only need to be replaced if there is noticeable seepage coming from where the valve cover meets the head. You can check this by opening the hood, removing the decorative plastic engine cover, and examining this area, paying close attention to the side of the engine closest to the firewall (where the cam chain pensioner resides).

My timing cover is leaking ALOT of oil. How much does that cost to fix?

My car has been leaking tremendous amounts of oil lately and I took it to the Auto Check place to get an oil change and a lookover. The guy tells me that the valve cover gasket and the timing cover are the problems. The timing cover is the worst. There is oil all over the place. The car is a 1997 240SX SE. They told me that it would be a 16 hour job and gave me an estimate of 155 for the valve cover gasket and 1,575 for the timing cover to be replaced. That's crazy! Am I being taken advantage of? I don't know much about cars but someone told me that was way overpriced and i'm a unknowledgable girl about engine work. I thought maybe it was because of my type of car (they stopped making them in 98). How much do these jobs normally cost and am I being screwed over? I'm new to the city and have no clue on what mechanic is good or bad. Is there a auto mechanic franchise out there that anyone would suggest for being less pricey and good? My timing cover is leaking ALOT of oil. How much does that cost to fix?
You can find a recommended garage in your area at the Click and Clack Car Talk website.

As far as the timing cover, front wheel drive cars with the sideways engine require a lot of labor to get to the timing cover, a whole lot of parts have to be removed from the motor - and all of that done in a confined area. So if your car is front wheel drive, the job is going to be pricey.

EDIT: As long as they are doing all the labor of getting to the timing cover and gasket, it's worth it to have the timing chain/belt replaced at the same time, especially considering that the car is a '97 and the part is 11 years old. They will probably recommend replacing the water pump for the same reasons. My timing cover is leaking ALOT of oil. How much does that cost to fix?
Your valve cover has a max of 2 gasket/seals, both of which %26quot;DO NOT%26quot; cost more than $20.00. He's making up a big fat story to rip you unsuspecting girls off. Like the other guy said, have a guy take the car in and see what the mechanic comes up with. Gasket and oil seal replacement should be around $100.00.My timing cover is leaking ALOT of oil. Specifications on the bolts on my valve covers?

i was considering cleaning up my valve covers and putting new gaskets on them. I know the process of changing the gaskets and cleaning the valves but im not sure how to find out what the bolts should be torqued too, nor do i know how or what to use to make sure they are torqued to the right poundage?Specifications on the bolts on my valve covers?
Just tighten down the bolts as much as possible without distorting or bending the metal flange of the valve cover. Parts stores or speed shops sell longer strips of metal brackets---3-4 inch-- than the original little brackets ---1-1/12 inch---under the bolt head to even the load out further...some older hi performance cars like Corvettes and Camaro's used them.

Contact your dealer if you don't have a Haynes Manual handy and ask the service department for the torque specs on the bolts to the cover for your specific car model since you didn't say what it was. It is the easiest and fastest method to find your answer!

  • 1985 vw golf diesel-- no reverse !!?

I just bought a 1985 vw golf diesel and the shifting was really sloppy. In order to get into first you kind of had to get into reverse and then pop it up and to the right. I decided to fix this by purchasing a shifter bushing kit and replacing the bushing in the linkage my self. The bushings were all toast. I replaced them and now cannot shift into reverse. If i have someone try to sit in the car and shift into reverse while I pull on the gear selector toward reverse it goes in. There is a rod with two ball joints on each end (the rear selector rod) that isn't moving horizontally enough to allow the car to shift into reverse. could it be that I don't have the something aligned right? maybe the housing that holds the ball ( size of a golf ball that is attached to a lever off the main shifter rod)... help I'm completely lost! Also, does anyone have suggestions on how to change a valve cover gasket successfully?? I appreciate any help!1985 vw golf diesel-- no reverse !!?
there is a linkage adjustment to be preformed after bushing replacement loosen the clamp on the shift rod and move it around until

a 1/8 inch drill bit will fit all the way through the adjustment hole then tighten the clamp this should fix your problem.

note shortly after bushing replacement a readjustment may be necessary as the bushings wear in.[generally 2 or 3 weeks of use ]then no more troubles.

tip diesel engine mount failures are common[timing belt end of engine] so are transmission mounts. if these are sagging, rotted,or broken

proper shifter adjustment will be impossible.

good luck1985 vw golf diesel-- no reverse !!?
I don't know Golfs specifically, but I think the reverse selector rod isn't adjusted correctly. I don't know if the rod has adjustment, but as you say, the rear selector rod isn't moving enough to allow it to shift into reverse. What you could do is to disconnect the rear selector rod and see where the lever has to be to allow reverse to be selected and adjust the rod to suit.

As I said, I don't know Golfs, but to change a valve cover gasket involves removing any equipment covering the valve cover, remove the screws holding the valve cover to the head, then pull the old gasket away from the cover.

Place the new gasket in position on the cover. You may have to insert the gasket into a groove in the cover and into the camshaft groove. Smear a little oil on the exposed face of the gasket. Place the valve cover in place on the head and screw it down and replace any equipment removed.

I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?

The 87 Ford F150 is a 2WD 4.9L in-line 6 manuel trans with dual tank. I changed the oil and oil filter, replaced the wiper motor with used part (mine was slow and stopping), new wipers, replaced the power booster with used part (mine had vacuum leak)(also this one is a little bigger then old one was), replaced bad seal in RR axle and added new gear oil, replaced 90% of brake lines because of rusty and broke when bleeding brakes (all clean brake Fluid now in lines), replaced center drag link (mine was egged and loose steering), replaced seals in steering for leaking, and added clamps to leaf springs (old ones broke or missing). I am not sure what else is need to do a tune up. I see and know of new spark plug wires and dis. cap. New starter and starter solenoid. The truck is running rich with black spitting out exhaust pipe. Have to change the valve cover gasket because of leaking oil as well as oil pan gasket. For oil pan gasket can i use the liquid gasket on it or buy a gasket? Please help me with my truck. How do i test the EGR valve also? Thank you!!I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?
try to check it out first on auto repair shop..I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?
I think you may have spent more than the truck is worth, but I think I can help with the brake light problem.

The switch for the brake light is inside near the top of the pedal. As the pedal is mashed, the switch contact makes and the lights come on. there is normally an adjusting nut to set the plunger closer to the pedal in full released position. you need to adjust so that there is about the double distance of a matchbook cover between the plunger and the pedal. This should allow the lights to come on as soon as any pressure is placed on the pedal.I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?
sounds like a vaccuum leak causing the richness and that produces the black smoke. check power booster for leaks or disconnected line.

have someone press brakes while you listen near booster for sounds of air leak. if no check other vaccuum lines by carefully spraying carb cleaner on all lines and if you hear a change in engine idle while doing this then the leak is in that area.

    also adjust brake light switch.

    1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem?

I just recently had a problem with this motor and it was burning extremely rich due to a misfire. I know because the gas gauge was going down rapidly and I fixed the problem with new wires, distrubtor cap, rotor, and spark plugs. Now I noticed that the old spark plugs had oil on them and then when I put the new ones in the engine started right up the smoke went away and the gas was being sipped on. Now I noticed oil leaking out of the valve cover gasket and I'm assuming that if I change the valve cover gasket this could solve the problem. (It did on my beamer) I was also told it could be the rings and that I would need a rebuild. I don't have much money and this is my only car now so I have to do all the work myself. So could it just be the valve cover gasket and if not how do I tell what it is? Oh and is it a good or bad idea to soak the plugs in gasoline to clean them?1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem?
if the oil is just on the plug threads then it,s the valve pan gasket leaking. if your saying the oil is on the firing tips then it,s probably oil rings or valve seals. try changing the oil and put a can of ( restore) in the oil. that stuff fills in tiny scratches in the cylinder walls and helps with oil consumption. i used it before and it helps to pick up the power too. i,am just trying to save you some money here.1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem?
You will be fine to just replace the valve cover gasket, Datsuns were hard on them for some reason. You cannot clean a spark plug with gas, you need a special sand blaster tool; it's kind of silly to do tho, just put in new ones.1979 Datsun 280zx oil problem?
Do a compression check before you do any work on the engine, it will tell you a lot.

Help! Should I drive or tow my car on this long trip?

I have a Ford 1998 and a 400 mile trip ahead. I'm not sure whether just to drive the car or rent a uhaul truck to tow it. Do you think it's too dangerous to drive a 11 y o car on highway? I maintain my car regularly, but in the last similar trip it had some burning oil issue. I had the valve cover gasket changed though.

What would you do if you were in my situation? Drive or tow? How would you decide if your car is %26quot;good enough%26quot; to drive or not? If drive how would you make it safe on highway? Many thanks for your help!Help! Should I drive or tow my car on this long trip?
You could have your car inspected by a mechanic. If the mechanic doesn't find anything wrong, and the tires/brakes are good, I would drive it. Renting a truck would be way more expensive than a pre-trip inspection, and you would spend a ton of money on gas. Even if you end up spending two or three hundred dollars on your car, it would still be cheaper than towing it.Help! Should I drive or tow my car on this long trip?
i hav a 1998 mazda. i drive it on the highway daily around 70 - 75 mph. still runs great. if your car is properly taken care of it should last a lifetime and run fine on the highway.Help! Should I drive or tow my car on this long trip?
If you have taken care of it on a Regular basis then it should have no problem making a 400 mile trip.

What do I do about the knocking noise from my '89 Nissan 240SX?

My car continuely overheats before where the needle will shoot up over H. To fix the problem, I flushed out the radiator and put a whole new batch of coolant. I also changed the thermastat and the valve cover gasket. The car continues to overheat but not as badly as before. With one problem, somewhat solved, there is a horrible knocking noise coming from the motor. When I start the car, the knocking noise becomes very loud no matter how much I rev the car. Most of the time when I accelerate, the knocking noise will go away until the next time I shut off my car and restart it again. I am not sure if I should get a motor or not. Could the overheating have something to do with it? What can I do to fix it without selling it? Yes, this car is very important to me.What do I do about the knocking noise from my %26039;89 Nissan 240SX?
Assuming it's the original motor, it's 17 years old and has probably just about worn out. You can do repairs piecemeal but when you fix one thing another will go and it will drive you nuts and cost a bundle. The best way is to get an exchange Long Motor fitted. This is a complete motor minus all the bolt-on bits like the manifolds, carbs, starter, alternator, etc. A good engine exchange place can do the job in one day, and you will have a new motor (fully tuned up), with a warranty (of at least 50,000 miles usually), and no worries. That's the best way to go. And the place will keep your old motor as part of the deal and send it off for reconditioning for the next customer's car.

That's much cheaper and faster than getting your own motor rebuilt. Most places will also arrange finance if you need it.

At the same time, get the brakes and suspension checked over and the cooling system as well. They can do exchange radiators, too -- with full warranty. MUCH cheaper than buying a new one from a dealer! And if anything needs fixing, get it all done at the same time. One bill is better than twenty, right? And less headaches -- which you do not need in winter.

Check around for 'exchange engine' places in your area and get a few quotes. And make sure you ask for a LONG (ie complete) motor, not a short motor which is only the block and what it contains. Your cylinder head will be pretty much shot by now so go for the long motor and save yourself some grief!

    Good luck,

LenkyWhat do I do about the knocking noise from my %26039;89 Nissan 240SX?
Sounds like a bad connecting rod, bad piston, a blown head gasket, or even a bad valve. It all depends on what you would like to do with that motor. What might of happened is that the engine was running so hot that the internal engine parts have expanded past their allowed clearances (warping of internal engine parts). And to explain the fade away of the knock as the car warms up, the clearnaces comeback to normal as the metal expands inside the engine. I would recommend replacing the engine with a rebuilt or send your engine out for an overhaul. What do I do about the knocking noise from my %26039;89 Nissan 240SX?

  • Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?

Ok here are all the details to this thing going on with my car. First so everyone knows, it is a Chevy Lumina z34 1993 with a dual cam overhead v6 in it, 3.4L. Ok now second we have replaced the air filter, air breather, fuel filter, and have checked all the fuel lines, poured fuel injector cleaner in the car and cleaned battery wires, changed the spark plugs and changed valve cover gasket (different problem, there was oil on the spark plugs for a while so ya hehe). The problem with my car is that it starts decent in the morning when i have let it sit overnight, and also starts good if you start it up right after you shut it off, but if you let it sit for like 2 hours or so then you have to give it gas to help it start (feather the pedal). So everyone knows also, the temperature gauge (inside the car) slowly gets over half (has gotten really hot, up to 260 degrees actually, and i thought it was the thermostat but i don't think this will affect how the car starts will it?) Anyways, then drops back down to a quarter, then slowly rises again and repeats, it doesn't seem normal but idk. Another thing is i filled the car with gas (completely full) and the gas tank leaked about half a gallon of gas and then stopped. (The leak came from underneath the car in the middle, where the gas tank is). Any ideas on what is wrong with it yet? Anybody? If you have anymore questions about info of what I have done with the car, noises it makes or anything like that, just type it up here on the page and I will answer back within a couple hours. TY, please everyone help! So in need of help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?
Well to start your seals are leaking. That is how oil got on your spark plugs. If oil is leaking then you probably have low oil. That can be very bad. You must check your oil every time you get gas. You have been lucky up to this point. If you run the oil reservoir too low you will seize the engine, it will freeze and will not work. You either get a new engine or new car. It is worth the two minutes to check the oil.

Second it sounds like your water or antifreeze is low too. I know everybody is in a hurry these days but you need to take care of the vehicle that takes care of you and keeps you protected.

Terrible things can happen to you from sheer laziness.

Picture breaking down in the wrong part of town all alone in the dark. You will wish you took the time.

Start caring better for your car it will run for more years to come. Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?
you say it,s hard to start after it warms up? this is just a guess but have the coil tested. if a coil gets too hot then it can break down and hard to start. you say the tank leaks? maybe it,s sucking air from the leak. Please help?!?! (Car Question) Starts ok cold but rough start when warm...?
if a car gets too hot it is harder to start until it cools alittle bit then should start fine. you do need to find out where the gas leak is and repair it im sure its not helping the situation at all.

Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?

I know the basics, can change my own oil, changed a water pump, starter, battery, etc...but now I want to restore my 1972 ford F100 and I dont know really where to start. The truck runs good EXCEPT for the following: the carberator needs to be changed, valve cover gaskets and possibly some on the engine block need to be changed as they look like they are disinigrating and half rotted away. I might at some point want to change the engine completely putting in a 351 cleveland. I also might want to add to the rear end speed so it is faster in general ( I dont even know if I said that right) so forgive me if I sound totally green here. Basically I am approaching 40, getting divorced and need a hobby. I have always wanted to restore an old vehicle so I am going to dive into this completely, just dont know where to start. Any help would be very appriciated, thanks!Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?
You can start in learn how to tune the carb. ie set idle, idle fuel mixture, choke. Maybe learn to rebuild one. Check your local library for the automotive books.

Next learn the distributor and timing. Actually if you can get rid off the points/condenser and change to electronic that would be the best thing to do. Never to have to deal with it again. Save money too, bc no need to buy a dwell meter or timing light(well rarely needed).

Working on cars/truck is all about the tools. Don't have the right tools, can't work on it.Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?
Go down to a quality book store and grab some books and glance through them all and gain a little info at a time. Sounds boring. I thought it would be, but I actually enjoyed sitting down and learning about what I truly enjoy. Also, I'm 17, so if that doesn't say anything, then I don't know what will, hahaWhats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?
Start the way of thinking : vintage, modern car, it's all same how to work. The different is technology, more brain and mental is work then computer, fragile and or rare parts. The rest is same, to get trouble shooting is same, only part place and how to do it is the different. Unless you try to build vintage, meanwhile your days work is starfleet officer, it's all totally different. Start read book of Haynes or Chilton, read magazine, and article is a good start. Even better if you can make relation to mechanic or society.

How much would/should i be charged for Rocker Cover gasket on 2001 Clio?

Having problem with oil escaping over engine, been told need to change the rocker cover valve?? But one garage told me it was head gasket even though no other signs that it is this and i also know the common problems this causes and am not experiencing this, just loosing oil, i have also had two others look at it who confirmed rocker cover needs replacing. What should i expect to pay for this repair of the rocker cover and all advise would be most grateful.

Nat - Hertfordshire - Thanks :) xHow much would/should i be charged for Rocker Cover gasket on 2001 Clio?
I had a clio 1.4 8valve a few years back and the head gasket leaks oil at the front of the engine just behind the exhaust manifold. This is quite common on this engine. Its a 7 hour job to do head gasketHow much would/should i be charged for Rocker Cover gasket on 2001 Clio?
It should only cost about 拢50 to change the rocker cover gasket. About 拢400 for the head gasketHow much would/should i be charged for Rocker Cover gasket on 2001 Clio?
If the head gasket has blown between an oil way %26amp; the outer edge than it will be a head gasket replacement. Just because the car is running ok %26amp; not losing water or getting mayonnaise under the filler cap doesn't mean the head gasket hasn't blown.

If oil is only escaping from around the rocker cover than it is only a rocker cover gasket that will need replacing. A rocker cover gasket can be damaged it the engine has a blocked breather filter or when the rocker cover is removed to adjust the valve clearances.

As garages vary the prices they charge depending upon location it might just be worth ringing a local independent garage (or two) %26amp; asking for a quotation on changing the gasket %26amp; when they have an appointment available.

take it to a detail shop and let them clean the engine as they know what to cover up and how to clean it.How to clean engine on 95 mitsubishi galant?
If your electrical commections are in good shape, you only need to watch the main fuse box under the hood, and the engine control module. Get a good engine cleaner from the parts store, put it on and let it soak. Use a brush to scub the engine and then hose it off. You can use a little pressure if you have a pressure washer, but be careful. MOst do it yourself car washes have a lower pressure cleaner setting for engines. How to clean engine on 95 mitsubishi galant?
Any commercial spray on degreaser will work. You really do not have to worry about covering anything on modern engines. Covering used to be an issue because wather could enter and foul distributor caps.

Soak the engine down and let it set for a few minutes before spraying it off. One thing to remember is that if you do this in your drive way you will stain it wilth the gunk. Commercial car washes have oil/water separators which capture the waste which is then disposed of in an environmentally sfe manner so I suggest doing the whole operation at your local self serve car wash. Also the high pressure water will make everything look like new.

if you DIY, you can use Aquaklean from kbs coatings.

  • Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?

    i have a 1989 olds.cutlessciera 4d cruiser.2.8 v6.

fel-provs 50085r is the gasket on the box i got from the zone.i have only one pan and two gaskets in the box.am i suppose to have 2 gaskets for one valve pan?and also if i drop the transpan to change the filter how much transmission fluid should i have to replace?Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?
If the transmission gasket is too big they gave you the wrong gasket for your car, take it back and have them recheck the as the gasket should fit the pan exactly and all the holes line up, I don't know why you got 2 gaskets for a transmission pan when you only need one. When you drop the pan if you buy 6 qts you should have enough with some to spare, just keep checking the stick after you get 4 qts in it and start the car and let it warm up and shift the car through the gears a few times while sitting and keep rechecking the level until you get it filled.Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?
Yeah its fine to have a little bigger as long as you matched the gasket up with all the bolt holes your fine. But they are usually a little bigger.Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?
On a v6 engine, you should have two valve cover gaskets.

The oil pan gasket would be larger, it would get installed on the bottom of the engine. If you drop the transmission pan and drain the torque converter (if accessible) I would fire the car back up on 5-6 quarts of fluid. Then add fluid until full by checking the dipstick.Valve cover gaskets why are mine bigger than the pan?are they supose to?
I think you have the wrong parts, likely because of your terminology. Valve cover gaskets, on a V6, would come in pairs. A pan gasket, properly called an oil pan gasket, goes on the oil pan on the bottom of the engine. As you have a transversely mounted engine, the transaxle (transmission) pan is also under the engine bay, but on the transaxle instead of on the engine.

Sounds to me like you are trying to change the transmission fluid. You need a transaxle pan gasket, transaxle filter, and likely about three quarts of transmission fluid.

    How much is a valve adjustment on 95 toyota 4-runner V-6 (3.0L)?

ive never adjusted the valves on my 4-runner and ive got 170k miles. i heard that this engine uses shims to adjust the valves. also my valve cover gasket is leaking on the left bank and i was wondering how hard it is to change the valve cover gasket. just looking at it looks like a difficult job.How much is a valve adjustment on 95 toyota 4-runner V-6 (3.0L)?
with the placement of the engind it is a difficult job, you most likely want a mechanic to do it as its very complicated and its really hard to get that cover right so it doesn't leak

Car Gaskets (Valve Cover & More)??

how often are you suppose to change your gaskets for the valve cover, headers, o rings, etc.

    for an acura integra.

is there a certain mileage when to change the gaskets for the car?Car Gaskets (Valve Cover %26amp; More)??
Gaskets are not meant to be changed like oil or other high use things in the engine if it leaks replace it if you opened it replace it if it is visually deteriorated or is pitted and appears rotting change it if not don't touch it they can be expensive and very time consuming depending on where they are, and if done incorrectly can lead to catastrophic failuresCar Gaskets (Valve Cover %26amp; More)??
well there is not a millage or nothing the only time you change them is when you start to see leaks or you start to hear nocking soundsCar Gaskets (Valve Cover %26amp; More)??
replace gsks when leaking or on each disassembly, ditto O rings.Car Gaskets (Valve Cover %26amp; More)??
